Sustainability Specialist

Position Summary:

The Sustainability Specialist oversees the strategy, content, management, and execution of all sustainability initiatives. They will be tasked with creating Baldor’s sustainability mission and vision statement by coming up with a strategic sustainability plan that will both improve Baldor’s brand and the company’s bottom line. Reporting to the Director of Sustainability, the Sustainability Manger will analyze the progress of all ongoing projects. This position will require strong communication skills; both internally, and cross departmentally. The Sustainability Specialist will additionally mentor and manage the sustainability team, as well as continue to grow and develop the department.

This opportunity holds the responsibility of reducing Baldor’s negative impact on the environment, positively affecting Baldor’s bottom line and impacting cultural norms around waste.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Project management: Envision and manage big picture projects to better Baldor’s overall carbon footprint. Develop key performance indicators to monitor and assess progress towards achieving company goals. This will require auditing existing process and executing bids from alternative vendors. This includes assessing Baldor’s energy use and presenting alternatives to reduce our overall intake and make our facility more energy efficient.
  • Sales: Promote IDP and SparCs program internally and externally. This includes growth of sales as well as bringing in new customers and developing visibility. This will require sales visits to customers as well as being available by email and phone to these customers at all times. Also the sustainability specialist will help marketing grow and develop the pledge local program. As these programs grow it will require hands on management of internal stakeholder to ensure that we deliver safe and high quality product that is in line with Baldor’s brand and mission.
  • Sustainable agriculture: As people in the industry become more aware of the importance of sustainable farming and regenerative agriculture you will be responsible for growing our partnerships with farms that use regenerative and sustainable practices, as well as local farms. Also as these programs grow you will need to educate internal and external stakeholders about their importance to the greater food system as well as our company.
  • Waste: The sustainability specialist will be tasked with designing and implementing new and creative solutions for managing waste. First and foremost to reduce the overall amount of waste that is produce at Baldor’s facility. This includes paper, plastics, disposables and packaging materials. One solution will be to create a zero waste to landfill program for Baldor as a company: including the office, warehouse and cafeteria. This will require finding a compostable hauler and producer of compostable disposable products. This person will also help create the SOP to manage the flow of organic waste throughout Baldor. This will additionally include offering education opportunities for company employees on new procedures. This will result in ensuring the success of the disposal of all (organic and non-organic) waste. Close hands on monitoring of this new program will be required.
  • Communication and Marketing: Oversee and manage the communication and marketing of sustainability within Baldor as well as to external stakeholders. This will require you to work closely with all departments (quality assurance and inventory control), Fresh Cuts, buyers, sales and other colleagues, vendors, and in the rare occasions, the press, to educate and inform them on the changes we are implementing and how they will impact the environment and workplace.
  • Managing: The sustainability specialist will be required to delegate and oversee projects given to the sustainability coordinator and other future members of the sustainability team. The results and progress of these projects will be reported by the Sustainability Specialist to the Sustainability Director.
  • Training and Professional Development: Oversee and manage the training of new hires about sustainability within the company as well as educating employees during employee training programs, off site visits and company retreats. This may require travel on occasion.

A bachelor’s degree in business, environmental sciences, environmental management, engineering or sustainability

2 years of professional experience in food systems and or sustainability

Passion for sustainability and knowledge of current laws and regulation within the field

An energetic, efficient, and resourceful team player and individual contributor


Sustainability Specialist will need strong interpersonal skills since they interact with a variety of groups, including local government or civic organizations, private citizens, and corporate employees. Critical thinking skills are essential for developing and implementing sustainability initiatives, while taking into account cost savings and project practicality. Sustainability Specialist must have the ability to collaborate, as they may be responsible for coordinating efforts among internal departments or external agencies. They will also need a strong background in program management, particularly with planning methods and coordinating programs, as well as budget preparation and monitoring.

Work on getting your ISO 14001 Environmental Management standard, as it will help you understand the basic environmental management framework your organization is working with and will ultimately help you get to grips with the industry standard.

It is also worth considering getting BREEAM certified. BREEAM is an environmental assessment method for buildings, useful for you to help figure out what running costs can be reduced, what needs to be measured and how you can effectively improve the performance of our building.


Relevant experience 

Experience in sustainability or environmental science is a must. Candidates with experience in business management must express a proven interest in sustainability or environmental science.


Commensurate with experience.


Hours are 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday Through Friday. On a rare occasion you may be required to work over the weekend to train weekend staff, perform audits and to implement physical changes.
